COVID-19 and the challenges of working from home

At the time of this writing (April 01, 2020), COVID-19 has been proclaimed a pandemic, with its impact felt in many areas of people’s lives. The need to self-quarantine and to practice social distancing has compelled many people to work from home. This has brought up a whole new set of challenges and a shift in perspective regarding work-life balance. Here are some of the most significant changes that people have had to go through as a result of COVID-19:

Adjusting to more time spent at home. Most people previously had strictly defined times for being at work and being at home. Having to work exclusively from home may throw off some people and make it difficult for them to shift between ‘work’ and ‘home’ roles.

Having to work with family members around. The idea of working in close proximity to family members might seem appealing. But this can be very distracting in reality. For most people, close contact with their spouse and children while working can be detrimental to focus and performance.

Making the home work-friendly. Not all homes have a space that is conducive to working. Depending on how your home is set up, you may have to make some drastic changes to your living and sleeping spaces, your furniture arrangement, and even the structure of your rooms.

Setting up the necessary equipment and infrastructure. If your work requires you to remain in contact with your employer or coworkers, you need to have the necessary technical equipment and infrastructure. A high-speed internet connection is a must, as is a reliable computer system. If you don’t have this equipment yet, you will have to factor them in when planning your shift to a work-from-home setup.

Dealing with household distractions. There is always something going on in the typical household, from phone calls, mail drops, and package deliveries, to visits from friends and family and neighbors dropping by. Although you may hardly notice these when you are chilling at home, they can be very distracting when you have to work.

Maintaining work schedules. Sticking strictly to your work schedule can be extremely challenging when working from home. There is always the temptation to watch TV, play a video game, or take a nap. Mustering up the discipline to stay focused on work is a challenge when you have to work from home.

Keeping work and personal life separate. It is difficult enough to keep your work and personal life separate when you work in an office. When working from home, it can be especially challenging to keep these two distinct areas of your life from blending in with each other.

The good news is that it is entirely possible to work at home and enjoy a rewarding and fulfilling life. Many people have put to practice the very same methods and principles that we propose on our site, utilizing them to achieve a healthier work-life balance. With the strategies, resources, and easy-to-implement advice we provide, you too could develop a work-from-home system that will work for you.
